the property website that was quite appropriately born in a barn
Frustrated by trawling general property websites in search of a barn to convert into a new home, mother of two Rhona Marshall decided to do something about it.
Rhona's idea was to launch a website dedicated to the buying and selling of barns and related agricultural properties and in June 2003 www.barnsetc.co.uk was born - appropriately enough in a converted barn near the Scottish town of Lockerbie where Rhona currently lives and works from home.
With no properties to list and no marketing budget it looked like it would be an uphill struggle to establish the website, but within days of it appearing on the internet, Rhona was amazed when she started receiving emails from other barn enthusiasts saying what a great idea it was.
Although the official launch date for the website is the 1st of August 2003, over 150 people have already signed up to be told of any barns that are listed in areas that interest them.
What's more, there are already 37 barns and related properties listed on the http://www.barnsetc.co.uk website - making it the number one website of its kind in the UK, maybe even the world.
As well as barns, windmills, oast houses and converted stables are listed.
Properties listed range from a £34,000 barn for conversion in the Charente Maritime region of France to a 16th century listed barn conversion in the Surrey village of Chipstead with offers invited in region of £1,000,000.
"I never imagined so many people would be looking for barns to convert," said Rhona, "but demand for barn living certainly seems to be outstripping supply at the moment."
